We are excited to welcome your student to UC Santa Cruz this summer!
Summer Academy is an exciting opportunity for all new slugs to transition into a world-class research institution. You’ll get a head start on degree requirements while experiencing a rigorous academic environment with dedicated faculty in small classes that support your success.
Living in the residence halls with Peer Mentors and Resident Assistants, you will not only make great connections with peer mentors, classmates, and roommates but also learn how to navigate campus life. Summer Academy also includes a ton of fun, including Bay Area road trips and exploration of the University’s unique location, culture, community, and identity.
Summer Academy Move-in
Academy students move into Porter College on Tuesday, July 23. Students cannot move in early, so make sure they plan to arrive on Tuesday. Parking will be in the Performing Arts Lot.
Move-in is followed by welcome activities before classes begin on Monday, July 29. The first few days on campus include events and activities such as the Summer Academy Meet & Greet, important residence halls meetings, fall course enrollment information, hikes, campus tours, BBQ and bonfire at Seabright Beach and other fun times in and around Santa Cruz!
(For Transfer Academy, living on-campus is optional, so disregard move-in info if your student is commuting)
WHAT TO BRING?
For six weeks, students shouldn’t bring too much. Remember their housing includes a full meal plan. Here are suggestions from the housing office:
If your student missed the July 1 deadline to submit their flight or train itinerary, they are responsible for their own transportation to campus. We recommend the following providers: Santa Cruz Airport Flyer, Santa Cruz Airport Shuttles, Early Bird Airport Shuttle, and Echo’s Airport Express.
Metro: If your student takes the bus, the Metro has a stop at Porter College. Here is their schedule and more info https://www.scmtd.com/en/
Student Driving to Campus
Easy! Your student can order a parking pass in advance, online, and pick it up on July 23 when they arrive:
Students can drive to Porter College to unload close to their building. The campus will have lots of move-in signage and all our staff will be there to greet them. Then, they move their car to a student lot.
Family Drop Off
Easy! You can drop your student off at Porter College on move-in day. Housing will contact them with move-in times, details, and maps. You will get a temporary parking pass (free) so you can help your student move in, hang out, visit the bookstore, have lunch, etc. Then that car will need to leave campus before nighttime (otherwise be subject to ticketing).
Student Changing Classes
The 2 credit class is required for your student to be eligible for the 25% off tuition discount. So they cannot drop Stevenson 26 (frosh) or the Kresge 25 (transfer). They can easily switch sections, though, if they want a different day/time.
For their 5-credit class, they can change their enrollment in their portal.

Medical insurance is required. Your student will be automatically enrolled in summer UCSHIP insurance. If they already have equivalent insurance, they have to complete the waiver process to opt out. The deadline is July 21 to submit materials to waive out, here is more information:
HOW TO CONFIRM or CANCEL
We need to know if students are coming, so we ask them to please confirm attendance by July 21.
If your student will no longer attend, there are several steps we need to take to cancel them (including drop their course enrollment, cancel their housing/dining contract, cancel medical insurance, and several more). Some cancellation fees might apply.
Summer Academy End
Move out is Saturday, August 31. Saturday is when you can come to pick up your student. Saturday is the day (and the only day) when we run free airport shuttles to SFO, SJC, and OAK, or to the Dirion San Jose Train Station.
Students then have a few weeks off, between August 31 and fall move in.
Some students have classes that end earlier and they want to leave prior to August 31. That is acceptable, but we only run the airport shuttles August 31. Your student will need to arrange with their RA to complete your room check out process early.
UCSC Summer Academy students who need continuous housing between the end of the Academy and start of fall quarter are welcome to stay! They can apply for “transitional housing” (studenthousing.ucsc.edu). Rates can be found on the housing website - https://housing.ucsc.edu/summer/academy/index.html
